Buddhists can take one or several of the Five Precepts, which are five basic vows that underpin the Buddhist way of life: (1) to refrain from killing, (2) to refrain from taking what is not freely given, (3) to refrain from sexual misconduct, (4) to refrain from using harmful speech, and (5) to refrain from taking intoxicants.
